Sports Redux: No Champagne For You
Roy Halladay wasn't going to let the Red Sox celebrate on his dime. With the magic number at one, the Sox just needed to beat Roy and the Wild Card spot (at least; they're still not giving up on Tampa Bay) would be theirs. But as the Sox learned, you can't spot Halladay a 5-0 lead and expect to come back.
Jon Lester was surprisingly un-automatic, as the Blue Jays touched him for one in the first and four in the second - nothing dramatic, just a bunch of timely hits. The Sox made a little noise in the third, as Ortiz doubled in a run and Jason Bay hit a 2-run homer, but that was all they'd get as they fell 6-3. So if the Red Sox lose the rest of their games, the door is still open for Minnesota, the Yankees, or even these Blue Jays to run the table and make life interesting. In other words, maybe the Sox should win today. It's Daisuke on the mound, speaking of making life interesting.
Congratulations to the Rays, though, who clinched at least the WC spot with a 7-2 drubbing of the Twins. Now every major league franchise has been to the playoffs at least once, even the Nationals (of course, they were the Expos then, but it counts). The Cubs also deserve some cheers for clinching the NL Central, and being the only National League playoff contender who doesn't seem to be running backwards right now. The fact that the Rays and Cubs both make the playoffs the same year they're turning on that supercollider that will destroy the Earth is a bit troubling.
Unless the aformentioned Sox-go-winless/Yanks-run-the-table scenario plays out (and we're lighting candles furiously just for having mentioned it), today is the end of the Yankee Stadium era. Expect to hear a lot about how awesome the Stadium is and how America's losing a treasure, without hearing a lot of people questioning why, if it's so awesome, it's being replaced.
BC broke their one-game losing streak by rolling Central Florida, 34-7. Chris Crane struggled through the first half, got benched, then got put back in and helped the Eagles blow it open. The Revolution got a 1-1 tie at the Rapids to get their first point in Colorado since 2004; Kenny Mansally scored the lone Revs goal.
And of course, the "Let's Make Joey Porter Think Before He Opens His Mouth" game kicks off at 1:00 today. Should be, anyway. The Herald wisely warns us to beware the trap game.

Isn't the magic number 2 for the Red Sox to eliminate the Yankees (yay!) and clinch a playoff spot?
Go Patriots!

Today's Globe says it's 2 games.
