Facial Hair
-- P. Adams Sitney started writing about experimental film at the punk rock age of 16, when he started the DIY journal Filmwise. His Ph.D. dissertation became Visionary Film, the 1974 tome that became the foundation of countless experimental film survey courses. Along with his experimental film heroes, Sitney founded the Anthology Film Archives and has been teaching experimental film history at Princeton since 1980. In a sense, he and the art form grew up together. Today, he reads from Eyes Upside Down, his latest, and he'll show films from Marie Menken, Stan Brakhage, Ernie Gehr, Hollis Frampton, and Su Friedrich to demonstrate his ideas about "Emersonian poetics" in American experimental film. Harvard Film Archive, Carpenter Center 24 Quincy St., Cambridge, 7 p.m. $10.
Volume
-- Scottish post-rock outfit Mogwai has earned a reputation for obliterating eardrums during its live shows. If a band that has been screwing around with loud-soft-LOUD dynamics since 1995 sounds like a bunch of fogeys, consider that they've brought along youngsters Fuck Buttons, a band that has kept drone rock sounding fresh for '08. Wilbur Theatre, 246 Tremont, 7:30 p.m. $25.
Noise
-- You may have thought that the buffalo cheese sticks were as experimental as Charlie's Kitchen could get. Not so. Bostonist's favorite Harvard Square joint offers local noise purveyor Heathen Shame, along with friends Chris Cooper, Ryan Jewell, and Dame Satan. Charlie's Kitchen, 10 Eliot St., Harvard Square, Cambridge, 8 p.m.
Public Displays of Affection
-- The Drink Boston blog has planned a "group hug" to mourn the demise and celebrate the achievements of the B-Side Lounge, a Cambridge establishment credited with resurrecting "classic cocktails and old-school bartending in greater Boston." The bar will be run and renamed by new owners by the end of the month, so this is your last chance to cry in your Negroni. B-Side Lounge, 92 Hampshire St., Cambridge, 5:30 p.m. Free.
