New Music About Old Statues
-- Boston Musica Viva, last seen at the Ditson Festival of Contemporary Music, will perform brand-new mini-operas inspired by local monuments to William Lloyd Garrison (seated on Commonwealth Avenue) and Leif Eriksson (standing, nearby, with chain mail, runes, and a horn). -- Bostonist does not speak with one voice on the topic of public pantslessness. Some Bostonists are for, and others, this one in particular, are against. -- Tufts alumna Jennifer Fitzgerald was a promising young composer who passed away last December, a victim of brain cancer. Tonight, an evening of Tufts's Call and Response new music festival will be dedicated to her memory. The event features the premiere of Tufts composer T.J. Anderson's "In Memorium Jennifer Anne Fitzgerald," performances of Fitzgerald's work, and additional pieces composed by her colleagues Hendrik Gideonse, Marc Faris, Sidney Boquiren, Michael McLaughlin, and Todd Hershberger. The North Carolina new music performance ensemble pulsoptional, which Fitzgerald co-founded, performs. Distler Performance Hall, Granoff Music Center, 20 Talbot Ave., Medford, 8 p.m. Free.
