Bostonist has finally thawed out from a chilly Saturday night in Harvard Square, site of the Le:60 Film Fest. Like Marco Polo returning from China, we come laden with tales of the wonders we witnessed. (Unlike the Italian, we also bring back some photos.)
In comparing the crowd in attendance with Palmer Street passers-by, one got the sense of witnessing something unique--people who just happened to wander in had no idea what was going on and why all these people were sitting in the cold. It's a shame that they were unaware, though, because the films on display illustrated the extreme level of creativity required to put forth an entire idea in a 60-second time span. The audience certainly appreciated the punchy animated numbers, such as the two entries each from Stitchup Showdown and Plushood, or even (post-event spoiler alert!) "Gossip," the other entry from eventual Best in Show winner Elena Wen. However, there is something to be said for an artist who can pull off a live-action scene (at least in part) in one minute: two great examples here are "Donuts" and "Videoperformance 20m."
But with more than 100 entries on display, not all can be winners, and at the end of the night the victorious film in each of five categories was announced. (They'll be up on the Le:60 website by week's end, so hopefully you won't wither from the impatience.)
Best Narrative: "Crossing Times Square" by Sara Blaylock (As noted in Friday's preview!)
Best Motion Graphics: "Dandelions" by Yves Geleyn
Best Animation: "Forestry" by Masato Hayafune
Best Local: "No Water No Moon" by Kristina Yee
Best in Show: "Air Plugs" by Elena Wen
Also featured on Saturday was an excellent performance before, in the middle, and following the exhibition of films from Cambridge indie rockers PANTS YELL!, who braved the cold weather and managed to hold still enough for Bostonist to get some great pictures.
