NIH Blue Ribbon Panel on BU Medical Center Lab
NIH Blue Ribbon Panel
On the BU Biolab
Roxbury Center for the Arts (184 Dudley St)
6:30 - 9:30 pm
Boston University's planned National Emerging Infectious Diseases Laboratories will be the subject of an NIH Blue Ribbon Panel tonight. The proposed National Biocontainment Laboratory is intended to study infectious diseases that may pose threats to our health and security. The labs have been under construction and review for some time, and have been protested by groups including BioJustice due to safety concerns and because the lab is being constructed in an area populated by many lower-income minorities, who would be most at risk were any security issues to occur.
The main purpose of tonight's meeting is to allow area residents to raise concerns about the project, which the NIH panel continues to review. The panel is also developing ways to help community members remain engaged in the planning and oversight of the lab. Definitely attend if you have strong opinions on the lab--either in favor or against--or if you want to learn more about the topic.
