This has been a nice little homestand for the Bruins, hasn't it? Last night, they followed up blowouts of Dallas and Toronto with a spirited, come-from-behind 3-1 win over Buffalo that launched them into a flatfooted tie for the Northeast Division lead.
It took a little time for the B's to find their rhythm after falling into a fairly quick 1-0 hole. But find it they did, as Dennis Wideman launched a slapshot past Buffalo's Ryan Miller. Tied after one. The B's' offensive assault continued in the second period, as Chuck Kobasew connected for his first of the season and Marc Savard his sixth. Coach Claude Julien, asked if this is the best week of hockey he's seen since he took over the Bruins: "When you try to do something with a team, you hope it progresses. I think the guys are understanding it more and more." The coaches in this town love to gush, don't they? The B's are off until Wednesday when they visit Chicago.
Boston College isn't afraid of a little tradition and mystique. The Eagles' defense suffocated Notre Dame, and the offense was up to the challenge as they put a 17-0 beating on the Irish at Chestnut Hill. BC has a six-game winning streak against ND, but then again almost everyone beats them these days.
Today: The Patriots try to come out ahead in the jumbled AFC East, with them, the Jets and Buffalo all tied for first. Tonight, the Celtics visit Allen Iverson and the new-look Pistons in what people in Detroit hope is a preview of the Eastern Conference Finals.
