Comedian Brian Regan makes a return to the Orpheum this Friday night. Regan has performed solo at the Orpheum in the past as well as in support of Denis Leary's charity-fest "Comics Come Home". Brian Regan is familiar to many, what with his 19+ appearances on "The Late Show With David Letterman", as well as countless appearances on Conan/Johnny Carson/Dr. Katz/Opie and Anthony/Comedy Central specials/etc.
One thing you'll get when seeing Brian Regan live is new material. Regan just had a very funny Comedy Central special, "The Epitome of Hyperbole", broadcast and released on DVD in September and he tells us he already has new material in addition to his fan favorites. One thing you won't get at a Brian Regan show is humor that relies on an endless stream of cursing or sexual crassness. Regan's no milquetoast angel, he just doesn't use expletives as a crutch for his work. This admirable aesthetic doesn't curb Regan's humor, it just makes him even more accessible - it would be a challenge to find someone that you couldn't bring to his show.

Bostonist: I'm glad that on your DVD you addressed the issue of themuchmaligned Pluto.
Brian Regan: I like that science stuff and I had read that some scientist referred to it as a "dwarf planet", you know? And it just kills me that you can use terms that are politically incorrect on our planet but feel free to just toss them at an entire celestial body, because no one out there can complain I guess.
Bostonist: Wasn't there some kind of group that decided that?
Brian Regan: That's true, there was a Planet Definition Committee. I mean wow, what a fun convention to fly in for - "We're wearing our party hats, we're going to the Planet Definition Committee Convention. We're going to have dictionaries and we're going to talk it up, and you never know what's going to happen man! You never know!"
[Arguing voices]"That's not a planet, it doesn't clear it's own orbit! It's orbit isn't elliptical like the others!
It's just really interesting to me that there's a lot of people into things that most people never think about. Somebody's got to decide what's a planet and I'm glad it's in their hands and not in mine.
Bostonist: Another thing you explore on "The Epitome of Hyperbole", is this phenomena of guy bashing that's happening on television, in commercials. Where men are portrayed as mindless idiots.
Brian Regan: It blows my mind, it's so unbelievably condescending. It's overtly condescending to men, but it's also condescending to women because it's catering to them because they're the ones going to the supermarket, at least from the product[marketer's] point of view. It's more of an insult to women that they are pandering to them because they're saying "We know that you do the grocery shopping" which is not what you're supposed to be thinking in today's world because everyone is equal and some women are career-oriented and maybe she won't be going to the supermarket.
It's overtly insulting to men and yet realistically insulting to women, it's a double insult all in one 30-second spot but obviously it works, so they do it.
[Listen to the podcast as Brian discusses everything from song piracy to the weirdness of Pat Boone, "The Simpsons", the trials and tribulations of working clean comedy, and what people should expect at his show.]
