Ben Ratliff
The Jazz Ear: Conversations Over Music
Brookline Booksmith
279 Harvard Ave., Brookline
7 p.m.
Ben Ratliff is the jazz critic for the New York Times. His new book, The Jazz Ear, collects interviews he has conducted with notable jazz musicians while listening to music of their choosing. The selections varied widely, Cantor Josef Rosenblatt for Ornette Coleman, Fats Waller for Sonny Rollins, and they sparked discussion about topics from melody to metaphysics, improvisation to influence.
Tonight at Brookline Booksmith, Ratliff invites pianist, composer, and New England Conservatory professor Ran Blake to a live interview. Blake insisted on film music, his current obsession, which will add a visual element to the proceedings.
