Grocerygate Continues at the Farmer's Market

South End Open Market 10/26/08Our Grocerygate series, designed to help you find a place to shop for Turkey (or non-Turkey) Day, continues with an exploration of farmer's markets contributed by Kim Liao, who also writes for Vernacular.

As the weather gets chilly, some of Boston’s best outdoor shopping venues are also getting ready to pack up for the season. The farmers’ markets are starting to wind down, putting frowns on foodie faces everywhere. After a bountiful fall season of providing fresh and flavorful apples, squash, greens, and other great produce and hand-crafted wares, the Boston farmer's markets gear up for one last hurrah: pre-Thanksgiving shopping!

Boston’s farmer's markets make seasonal cooking fun. From conversations with local farmers about the best way to prepare unique fruits and vegetables (arugula pesto?!), to feeling the support of a vibrant local community of shoppers and eaters, we will surely miss these staples of local food shopping this winter. (However, you can check out http://massfarmersmarkets.org/ to find vendors who will be doing CSA shares of local foods this winter.) So whether you’re cooking your own meal, bringing a dish to a friend or family’s house, or in need of a thank-you-for-sharing-your-turkey gift, we offer the scoop on your best bets for hitting the farmer’s markets next week after the jump.

Fall farmer's market nirvana on the next page! Image tagged Bostonist by bethaleh.

City Hall (MW 11-6 pm, until Nov. 26) - Check out this market for apples, greens, root vegetables, and a wide selection of pies, including old standbys like pumpkin and more adventurous flavor combinations like pear-ginger or chocolate-pecan.

Copley Square (TF 11-5 pm, until Nov. 25) - One of the most quintessentially “Boston” farmers’ markets, this one has turkeys from Stillman’s Farm, squash, and an especially wide selection of baked goods, which make great gifts.

Central Square, Cambridge (M 11:30-5 pm, until Nov. 24) - Are the relatives coming in to stay with you? Come here to stock up on your bacon and sausage for weekend brunches, as well as other meaty needs. Also specializing in a variety of root vegetables, greens, squash, and apples.

Davis Square, Somerville (W 12-5, until Nov. 26) - One of our local favorites, Davis Square offers an excellent selection of apples, vegetables, pasture-raised lamb and beef, goat cheese, maple syrup, and homemade spices, sauces and gifts for any kind host.

Why go local for Thanksgiving, you may ask? All the extra work of trekking to another shopping location is compounded by a labor-intensive harvest menu: peeling potatoes, coring apples, figuring out what to do with five pounds of squash. But while grocery stores sell generic, almost-instant Thanksgiving staples, a farmers’ market Thanksgiving brings back that homemade feeling of seeing your meal evolve before your eyes. From the potato grit under your fingers, to carrot tops bursting out of their bags, to apples rolling their way haphazardly across your kitchen counters, it's just a blissful experience.

So enjoy Thanksgiving locally! And what better way to show your loved ones you care than to cook them some food that was grown with just as much careful attention?
