Vegan Brunch? Brookline's Tamarind Bay Might Deliver

bhindi.jpgRecently, Bostonist checked in with Washington Square's Tamarind Bay, which opened earlier this fall. The "coastal Indian kitchen" has been doing a brisk business among Brookline's ethnic food-loving residents, who pack the blue, ocean-themed dining room on weekend evenings to sample the complex flavors of Tamarind Bay's seafood specialties and load up on their excellent naan. But during the days, the restaurant sits empty, so manager Naveen Guntupalli is considering expanding on their sizable and woefully underreported selection of vegan dishes to create an all-vegan brunch menu on weekends. Love the idea? Wish you were having a vegan brunch right now? Leave a comment here, stop into Tamarind Bay, or drop Guntapalli an email at Naveen [at] Tamarind-Bay [dot] com.

I would definitely patronize a vegan buffet. I go to the Deluxe Town Diner in Watertown now for vegan pancakes pretty often but some variety would be nice.

The vegan breakfast items at Herrell's Allston cafe are reasonably priced and available every morning, plus they taste great, so I'm pretty satisfied with that. But once in a while I will head over the Veggie Planet for their deece brunch.

Can't beat a vegan restaurant offering a vegan brunch, though. Vej Naturals in Malden is awesome.

I would marry a vegan brunch!

Tell me where, when and how and I'm there. In all honesty whichever restaurant masters a vegan brunch I firmly believe you'll have every vegetarian, vegan and health conscious individual from Brookline to Boxborough there.

I for the life of me cannot figure out why Boston has so little in the veggie dept. Sure you can find many Asian restaurants (eg MyThai cafe), but someone needs to step up and do like a Red Bamboo or Kate's ala NYC. I mean even Providence and Portsmouth, NH have a wider swatch of veggie options.

I agree with you, Itsmejono! I wish there were myriad options in Boston, considering its food-conscious population, but change has been slow in coming. It's too bad, because veggie food-lovers tend to be a loyal, vocal and grateful crowd -- which you'd think would be a major asset to any up-and-coming restaurant. At least Guntapalli gets this.

Epski, those are some nice options. I've heard good things about Vej Naturals and I always love Herrell's and Veggie Planet. But when it comes to brunch, you want something that you can stumble down the street to eat (Malden and Cambridge are a little far for a car-less Brookliner) and for me, it's nice to have someplace where you can take friends who aren't into the raw/vegan/hippie thing so that everyone feels comfortable.

I also think that it's nice to have options beyond the typical "brunch" fare and/or the typical vegan fare, which is usually very heavy on the tofu and substitutes -- whereas Indian cuisine is just naturally vegan, and still tastes great.

I got an email from Naveen that the vegan brunch will start on Saturday December 20th (noon thru 3 pm). They may have brunch on Saturdays after that - but might call ahead to double check.
