Another day has come and gone, and the Red Sox roster remains unchanged. The rumors we keep hearing are about the same as we've been hearing for a while. There are rumors about making a biggish trade, sending Mike Lowell and a pitcher to Texas for catcher Jarrod Saltalamacchia (and you thought spelling Mientkiewicz was hard), moving Youk to third and bringing in Mark Teixeira at 1B. There's also some buzz buzzing about Junichi Tazawa, the Nippon Oil pitcher who may or may not be ready for the majors.
The Sox also may or may not re-sign Jason Varitek, possibly to a one-year deal. Scott Boras says he's heard no such rumor, but Scott Boras may not be entirely trustworthy. He seems to think that every team in the league is drooling over a .220-hitting 36-year-old. Don't get us wrong, we'd love Tek to be here forever (and Mike Lowell, while we're at it), but we're not writing the checks.
Bostonist sends out its love and best wishes to Tommy Heinsohn today, as his beloved wife Helen passed away yesterday after a battle with cancer. Tommy mentioned "the redhead from Needham"in pretty much every game he broadcast, and she became part of the Celtics family. PerkIsABeast posts a memory.
