Movies
-- It wasn't the first spy movie, or even Alfred Hitchcock's first spy movie, but The 39 Steps (1935) might be the first spy masterpiece. A rolling boil of intrigue, misdirection, and mysterious clues, the pacing hardly gives Robert Donat time to pause as he figures out the plot and proves himself innocent of a murder that he did not commit. It's a brand new print, which is always a good excuse to catch a classic film. Brattle Theatre, 40 Brattle St., Cambridge. Through Sunday. [Tickets and showtimes]
Hipster Toys
-- Local hipster boutique hosts an opening for the collections of L3mn and Lym3, toymakers and designers who are opening a new design firm called Citris. Lab Boston, 113 Brighton Ave., Allston, 7 p.m. Free with RSVP.
Rocking Steady
-- If the idea of Boston ska makes you cringe—and conjure images of dudes bouncing around in shorts and plaid blazers—the city has a pleasant surprise for you. Westbound Train, Mile 21, and Hayley Jane and the Primates each play a species of ska that's more closely related to James Brown than Dicky Barrett. Real foundation sounds. Middle East Upstairs, 472 Mass. Ave., Cambridge, 9 p.m. $10.
