We wouldn't normally start off our Redux action with a look at high school football, but we've joined the masses following the drama surrounding the Mansfield-Bishop Feenan football semifinal scheduled to kick off tonight at Bridgewater-Raynham High School.
The quick take: Mansfield had an ineligible player appear in a couple of games this season. He hardly played, but Massachusetts Interscholastic Athletic Association forbids such conduct. As such, the MIAA wanted to cancel the game and advance Bishop Feenan to the championship. Taunton Superior Court granted an injunction, and the MIAA considered fighting it but now will allow the game to take place. We'll be curious about what things the kids (and their parents) are shouting at the game tonight.
Our take? It would have been a lousy way to advance to a final if the game wasn't played. But Mansfield made an error and rules are rules. We don't want the Hornets storming Bostonist HQ, but if a fifth-year player is deemed ineligible by the league, it's pretty simple: don't have the player on the roster and don't ultimately jeopardize your season hoping no one notices.
Back in the pro scene, where the Yankees are a team people don't want to play for and the Sox are a team that may or may not keep its captain, the Hot Stove continues to seem more like a slow simmer. We're getting desperate for some signings, people! Trade! Buy! Do something!
In fact, follow the Pats' example. It appears that New England will be welcoming Rosevelt Colvin back to the lineup, helping out an increasingly thin roster.
The Bruins are hoping that two pairs of fresh legs assist a defense that has been suffering hit after hit as of late. Johnny Boychuk and Matt Lashoff will be among the seven defensemen heading down to Florida; with the loss of Andrew Ference and Aaron Ward's injury on Saturday, the team needs defenders who can keep on the ice and away from the trainer's office. Good luck, fellas. Mind your knees.
