-- You are running out of chances to see rarely screened gems from Nagisa Oshima, and we are running out of ways to motivate you to go. We'll leave it to the HFA to convince you that Diary of a Shinjuku Thief (1968) is worth seeing: "Oshima launched a guerilla assault on narrative continuity and political neutrality in his playfully experimental fable about a sexually confused book thief loose in Tokyo's boisterous Shinjuku neighborhood." Unfortunately, narrative continuity launched a counter-insurgency and regained the hearts and minds of moviegoers from Tokyo to Boston. Harvard Film Archive, Carpenter Center, 24 Quincy St., Cambridge, 7 p.m. $8/$6.
