Sports Redux: Bowled Over

Losing to the Commodores. Nobody around here has uttered those words since like 1985. But it's the sad reality for Boston College, who lost their nine-game bowl winning streak to the Vanderbilt Commodores, 16-14, in the Music City Bowl.

Dominique Davis threw for two touchdowns to give the Eagles a lead through most of the game, but Vandy kept close with a fumble recovery in the end zone, and and couple of field goals, a late drive marred by BC penalties, and won it late when Bryant Hahnfeldt's third field goal sailed through with three and a half to go. "You have to find a way to get one more point, and that's what counts," said coach Jeff Jadgozinski, in his bid to be inducted into the Terse Boston Coach Society.

The Patriots are nervously awaiting the decision of Scott Pioli, the personnel architect behind their decade of success. The Cleveland Browns are preparing to offer him total control of the franchise, which frankly needs help. But there's some indication that Pioli is making pie-in-the-sky demands because he really doesn't want to leave Foxboro. If that's true, Bob Kraft, buy that man a Camaro.

The Bruins host a rematch with Pittsburgh today, but the eyes of the hockey world are on Chicago, where the Red Wings and Black Hawks are going to play a matinee outside at Wrigley Field. And if you're thinking what we're thinking about historic ballparks hosting hockey games, apparently Fenway has too many wintertime renovations planned to really do this. Gillette? Harvard Stadium? This would be the coolest thing ever. Make it happen.
