The New York Times Will Ditch Boston Then Implode in May, Predicts The Atlantic

To be somewhat more accurate, The Atlantic says "the odds that The Times will cease to exist entirely come May are relatively slim." But slim is still something! Boston sports fans hung onto slimmer hopes for years! Yet The Atlantic specifically proposes that the NYT unload its Boston holdings in order to make ends meet:

[The Times] could sell The Boston Globe—or shutter it entirely, given what the company itself has acknowledged is a challenging time for the sale of media properties. It could sell its share in the Boston Red Sox...

So is the Globe a goner? Are the Sox for sale? The rumors are roiling, but no sale has been officially announced. Keep your eyes open, as this could be your chance to own a part of your favorite newspaper—er, team—and influence the history of journalism... by copying HuffPo, which The Atlantic envisions as the future of online journalism. And does The Atlantic think that a NYTPo (or even no NYT Co) would be such a bad thing?

Ultimately, the death of The New York Times—or at least its print edition—would be a sentimental moment, and a severe blow to American journalism. But a disaster? In the long run, maybe not.

The Sox in the wrong hands, though—now there's a disaster. Let's hope any transition of the team ends smoothly. As for journalism? Well, we'll let the Globe continue to do what it does so well: trend pieces! About rich people!
