Jazz
-- Saxophonist James Carter was once regarded as The Next Big Thing in jazz, but a dozen years of his performances have mellowed the critics somewhat. Now he's just a boss baritone player who can play just about anything. His appeal is wide—anybody who can release an album with avant-garde saxophonist Hamiet Bluiett and a tribute to Pavement within two years should make a lot of friends—and his sets are fun. Playing tonight with his organ trio. Sculler's Jazz Club, Doubletree Hotel, 400 Soldiers Field Rd., 8 p.m. and 10 p.m. through Saturday. $25.
Movies
-- You know what all work and no play make Jack into, right? The Shining (1980) scared the pants off of a young Bostonist, and common decency dictates that he should not see it again in public. The Brattle Theatre, 40 Brattle St., Cambridge. Tickets and showtimes.
-- The Museum of Science will be showing free movies every Friday night on its IMAX screen. Tonight's offering is Roving Mars a look through the eye of a Mars lander. Cornell University astronomer Steve Squyres will be on hand to tell you what you're seeing. Museum of Science, 6:45 p.m. Free.
Dancing Hipsters
-- Marinate, the monthly hip hop and dancehall party hosted by DJs Tommee and Knife, convenes for one last time tonight. Milky Way Lounge, 403 Centre St., Jamaica Plain, 9 p.m. Free.
Discounts!
-- American Repertory Theatre, who must be feeling the recession, is offering a one-day special on tickets to its remaining shows this season. And the shows are nothing to sneeze at: Chekhov’s "The Seagull, Samuel Beckett’s Endgame (directed by Bostonist fave Marcus Stern), Christine Evans's Trojan Barbie, and David Mamet’s Romance. Seats are $25 while they last, and if your sexual partner likes late modernism, Endgame opens on Valentine's Day. More information.
