-- Even if it weren't for the strong ensemble acting—from none other than Robert Mitchum, Jane Greer, Kirk Douglas, and Rhonda Fleming—Out of the Past would be a classic for its striking cinematography. Jacques Tourneur's 1947 film noir benefited from the stark lighting and tight shots of the unjustly overlooked Nicholas Musuraca, whose cinematography helped establish the grammar of the film noir.
