Did Ray Allen just save the season?
With the Celtics listless and losing, they went to Toronto yesterday and finally came out winners, as Ray Allen had his best night ever in green (not counting Seattle green and Milwaukee green, if Milwaukee wore green when he was there, which we're pretty sure they didn't), scoring 36 and pacing the C's to a 94-88 not-really-that-close win over the Raptors.
Ray hit 8 of 10 from three-point land, 11-for-14 overall, and got good and confused by Doc Rivers after the game. "Feed the pig, that's what we always say," said the Doctor, to which Ray rightly and confusedly responded, "one day you have to slaughter the pig." It was the kind of day the Celtics could make ham-handed (sorry) barnyard jokes, because they finally looked like the good Celtics again. The only worrisome part was that Paul Pierce collided with Brian Scalabrine, and unfortunately, it's Pierce who hurt his knee and is up in the air for tonight's Raptor rematch.
As we feared, the Patriots' coaching staff is splitting up. Josh McDaniels is off to Denver; the Pats' offensive coordinator, who is (gulp) 32 years old, will replace Mike Shanahan, who had coached the Broncos since McDaniel was 18. Defensive specialist Dom Capers may well go with him.
Around the NFL, the birds did it again, as the Eagles knocked the Giants out (thank you, Eagles), setting up an Phi/AZ NFC Championship between a team that tied the Bengals and benched their QB halfway through the season, and the most godawful franchise in sports this side of the Clippers. The Steelers/Ravens matchup in the AFC title game is a lot less farfetched. We're going to go on record as predicting an I-95 Superbowl, with the good people of Delaware torn between the Eagles to their north and Ravens to their south.
It's Hall of Fame day! The ballot is here. If we got a vote (we don't), we'd pick Rickey and Rice, of course, plus Tim Raines, Mark McGwire (reluctantly), and Mark Grace, because we've always liked him. Which means it's probably good we don't get a vote.

Bostonist might need a Coaching Redux feature this week. Let's see...
Josh McDaniels goes to Denver, and takes Dom Capers. Pioli may go to K.C., too. The Globe's Mike Reiss briefly discussed the remaining Pats offensive coaches and seemed underwhelmed. We also don't know who will replace Pioli, if he goes.
Can BB do everything?
BC is almost as busy as BB as Gene DeFilippo tries to replace his own non-HC of the NYJ. Coach Spaz was/is the favorite, maybe, as DeFilippo interviews people like Barry Gallup, Steve Addazio and Mike London.
Gallup was 38-60-1 as coach of Northeastern, a fact listed on BC's website, which should rule him out. Addazio and London are serious options unless you believe DeFilippo was genuinely concerned about coaching loyalty when he canned Jagodzinski.
Hey, does Jagz have BB's number?
Giant center Shaun O’Hara was quoted in the New York Daily News as saying “I think shock would be an understatement. When you look at the season we had, the number of games we won, the way we won them, I can’t even fathom not continuing to play. To have it taken away now, it’s the worst feeling ever.” Try going 18-0 and then losing in the Super Bowl, Shaun.
