Openings
-- Carolyn Shadid Lewis, a MassArt MFA candidate, opens her her thesis show today. From Twilight Til Dawn is a massive installation and video piece about war, its psychological effects on participants, and the injuries it leaves on their bodies. It features World War II films transferred to video, original animations, and conversations between Shadid Lewis and her own father, who had been a paratrooper. The installation is dominated by a sea of parachutes hung from the ceiling. Pozen Center for Interrelated Media, Massachusetts College of Art and Design, 621 Huntington Ave., 6 p.m. (through January 21). Free.
Efficiency
-- As the mercury approaches zero this week, home energy efficiency is probably on a lot of Hub residents' minds. If it's on yours, drop by Kerry Koskinen's lecture tonight, which presents basic tips on increasing home energy efficiency. Koskinen is a professional green renovator, so you'll be getting some valuable information for free. Livable Streets Office, 100 Sidney St., Cambridge, 7 p.m. Free.
Rock
-- Beat Circus doesn't sound like its name. Far less interested in rhythm than in melody, the Boston septet plays a gothic-folk hodgepodge that fans of Nick Cave will savor. Performers play the harmonium, tenor banjo, trombone, and other instruments rarely found in pop music. Performing with Larkin Grimm and La Strada. Middle East Upstairs, 472 Mass. Ave., Cambridge, 9 p.m. $9.
