Flight of the Conchords is a popular HBO show featuring the awkwardly hilarious interactions of musicians Jemaine Clement and Bret McKenzie. Allston's Great Scott held a viewing party featuring episodes from the show's upcoming second season last Friday night. The venue threw open its doors to a frozen-solid crowd and offering an open bar and free food in exchange for hearty (and possibly drunken) laughter. Lured by the promise of seeing the second episode of the new season a full week and change before it aired on HBO, FoTC fans descended into the bar to gather up free notebooks and posters covered in hairy New Zealanders’ faces.
The first episode of the season has been available for about a month on FunnyOrDie.com. It rejoins the two-man “digi-folk” band in its attempts to find a gig after firing distracted manager Murray. Unfortunately, Murray’s other clients (of “Doggy Bounce” fame) are sued for stealing their two-time platinum hit from a Polish band, and Murray loses everything. The first episode ends with Murray and the boys back to square one: poor, shacked up in a tiny Chinatown apartment, and stalked by devoted fan, Mel.

Episode two is much funnier than the first. Bret sets off a chain reaction of check bouncing, spiraling out of control until Jemaine decides to sell his body to pay the bills. Unfortunately, as he says matter-of-factly, no one wants to be with him even when it’s free. Several memorable musical numbers brighten up the plot: one features Bret and Jemaine freak dancing and shaking their “sugar lumps” for bemused restaurant-goers.
We hope this season will be able to stand up to the first and provide devoted viewers with some new material to share at basement parties throughout the city of Boston. It’s about time the Kiwis get more famous on the show, maybe gaining another fan and letting Mel return to her husband from time-to-time.
To continue the buzz, a new site calls for fans of the show to submit a “Lip Dub Fansterpiece” of The Conchords’s popular rap song, “Hiphopopotamus vs. Rhymenoceros”. The best clips will air on HBO and preserve the winners’ complete lack of coordination and embarrassing antics forevermore! Submissions end January 25th, so hurry. If you've got design skills and would like a little more time to come up with a brilliant Conchords contribution, there's also a poster contest with entries due February 20.
