Open Houses
-- It's MLK Day, and the MFA is betting that the hordes of folks who have the day off will want to do something for free. They're not wrong. The MFA hosts an open house. Admission to the museum is free, and there's a grip of special events to occupy your day, including films, poetry slams, and live music. Museum of Fine Arts, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Free. More information.
Movies
-- No early horror film score would be complete without the theremin, and electronic music may have taken a very different shape without it. Its Russian inventor Léon Theremin led an eventful life, inventing an entire orchestra of electronic instruments before being abducted by the KGB and put to work designing listening devices for spies. The film Theremin: An Electronic Odyssey (1994) looks at his life and legacy. MIT professor Tod Machover, himself a composer and inventor of electronic instruments, introduces the film. Coolidge Corner Theatre, 290 Harvard St., Brookline, 7 p.m. $9.75/$7.75.
Rock
-- Toronto's Fucked Up has a band name that you can't say on the radio, which probably doesn't matter as much as it used to since nobody listens to the radio, but it still takes some sack. It's a not-so-straightforward hardcore act that cooks anthemic choruses and feedback squall into a sonic reduction suitable for even the finest cut of rock. With Clouds and Viva Viva. Middle East Upstairs, 472 Mass. Ave., Cambridge, 9 p.m. $12.
