Still from La Ronde courtesy HFA.
-- The HFA continues its retrospective of director Max Ophuls with a pair of films from different stages of his career. La Ronde (1950) was a French feature, an adaptation of Arthur Schnitzler’s play that dissected erotic desire by following a daisy chain of illicit encounters. Comedy of Money (1936) is Ophuls's only Dutch film and a rare comedic turn for the dour director. Screening separately. Harvard Film Archive, Carpenter Center, 24 Quincy St., Cambridge, 7 p.m. and 9 p.m. $8/$6.
Beats
-- Nightmares on Wax was one of the first IDM crews, releasing a bleepy-bloopy single on the nascent Warp Records two decades ago. The crew has since become a downtempo chill out act, but its live show is still essential for fans of electronic music. Paradise Rock Club, 967 Comm. Ave., 7 p.m. $15.
Jazz
-- The Ken Schaphorst Big Band features the entire complement of heavy hitters who make up the jazz faculty at NEC. Anchored by Schaphorst, whose compositions the group will perform, the Big Band includes saxophonist George Garzone, trombonist David Harris, pianist Frank Carlberg, drummer Rakalam Bob Moses, and percussionist Jerry Leake. Jordan Hall, New England Conservatory, 30 Gainsborough St., 8 p.m. Free.
