A weight was lifted from the hearts of the New England bear community today when Red Sox captain and catcher Jason Varitek reluctantly agreed to be paid $5 million to play a game that he is no longer that good at. (Just in case you hadn't heard.) [Boston.com]

Kells Closing

I think the Sox might regret that signing.
I'm going to reserve judgment on 'Tek's signing until some point after 1/31/09. I'm uncertain of his role and don't know who will be the other catcher is.
I'd be surprised if Varitek is the everyday #1 catcher. I think those days are gone. If he's sharing time and is expected to mentor his replacement and continue to bolster a staff that clearly believes in him then it is another shrewd deal from the Sox.
At the least, it keeps Varitek, and his knowledge of the Sox staff, from possibly joining a team that may be a challenger to Boston for a playoff berth.
