I'm uncertain of his role and don't know who will be the other catcher is. I'd be surprised if Varitek is the everyday #1 catcher. I think those days are gone. If he's sharing time and is expected to mentor his replacement and continue to bolster a staff that clearly believes in him then it is another shrewd deal from the Sox.
