Massachusetts' own Grinding Tapes Recording Company has been toiling away in semi-veiled obscurity since its inception in 2005. Like any great DIY label, Grinding Tapes extols an excellent lineup of musical artists and a homegrown manifesto to match it. All the artists on the label recoup a significant amount of money from CD, vinyl, and digital download sales; a small portion of the money that each artist earns is donated to a charity of that musicians' choice; and Grinding Tapes uses TerraPass to offset CO2 emissions from mail-outs.

Tonight, Grinding Tapes will take over the Middle East Upstairs and make its presence known. Among the lineup, the curiously-named Earth People Orchestra have a lo-fi-folk-meets-Polyphonic-Spree feel, and it should be quite a sight to witness over a dozen musicians cram onto the Middle East Upstairs' stage to play their didgeridoos, Dobros, and glockenspiels. Also featured in the lineup are The Points North and Mr. Sister, which present distinct takes on bedroom-folk.

Out of all these acts, Elijah Wyman just might steal the show. With a voice that manages to handle high-pitched coos and rabble-rousing shouts with ease, Wyman has won quite a bit of praise while playing alongside David Bazan and Jogn Vanderslice. Wyman left this state for North Carolina a couple of years ago, so be sure to catch his set at the Middle East; who knows when or where you'll be able to see him in the future.
