Sports Redux: These Are The Times That Try Men's Souls

commonsense.jpg Sure, Thomas Paine may have thought he was writing about the coming bloody separation of the Colonies from England. But with the perspective of history, we know know that his opening line actually referred to the 2008-09 Celtics. They haven't played badly...and that's the worry, since two of the other top teams in the league have now come into the Garden back to back and left with wins.

Yesterday it was San Antonio, who combined with the Celtics for 47+ minutes of top-notch, exciting basketball. Rajon Rondo dished out 15, Kevin Garnett scored 26 in one of his best games in the season...but the Spurs, as they do, were with them all the way, thanks to some clutch shooting by the improbably Matt Bonner and Roger Mason Jr. It came down to the wire. It came down to a clear-path foul on Paul Pierce after Manu Ginobili knocked the ball out of Ray Allen's hand (or, depending on your p.o.v., after Ginobili smacked Allen's arm causing the ball to fall out, but if we only complained about refereeing this past week, we'd be here all day.)

So if you consider the Lakers, Spurs and Cavs the biggest threats to the C's' repeating...well, the C's haven't beaten any of them since opening day. If you consider Orlando, New Orleans, or any other good team threats...well, things look a little better. But with the Celtics on the road for the rest of eternity (they don't get back to the Garden till the 27th), it's troubling. That's just common sense.

Everyone's buzzing about this weekend's A-Rod revelations, and it's made for some interesting bedfellows. Media member Tony Massarotti and media gadfly Curt Schilling are both taking the eminently sensible position that, if there are 104 names on the supposed list that A-Rod was on, let's hear them all. As much as we hate A-Rod, there's no reason for him to be singled out here (but Mazz's "A-Roid" nickname is pretty good). We can take it. Especially if there are more Yankees.

Tonight: BU and Northeastern for the Beanpot. Terriers vs. Huskies. Who will be howling at the moon?

Good game by Celtics and Spurs, the two smartest teams in basketball in my opinion. Nicely set up for a big finish and big win by either team. Too bad there was that questionable steal and clear path foul. It would have been betetr to have ended it on a great shot by one team or the other or a great defensive play by one of them than a referre's decision, but here's hoping we get to see these two teams in The Finals in June.

VinF is right. Two teams in a competitive game. The Spurs will have their hands with LA, tho. They look tough. LA is 5-1 so far vs. the C's, Spurs and Cavs.

I don't need any more A-Rod news.
