-- Ireland and the Irish in Early American Cinema follows the portrayal of the Irish as they morph from drunken hordes of imbecilic immigrants to noble paragons of civic virtue. Hosted by WGBH's Brian O'Donovan and including live performances of traditional Irish music. Coolidge Corner Theatre, 290 Harvard St., Brookline, 7 p.m. $10/$7.

-- The HFA's Max Ophuls retrospective continues with a pair of his Hollywood movies. The Reckless Moment (1949) features a fantastic turn by Joan Bennett, an overprotective mother who wants to shield her daughter from a murder investigation. The Exile (1947) features an ever-jolly Douglas Fairbanks, Jr. as a man exiled in Holland. Harvard Film Archive, Carpenter Center, 24 Quincy St., Cambridge, 7 p.m. $8/$6.
