Joss Whedon of Buffy and Firefly (sniff) fame is back in top form with Dollhouse, a highly anticipated new sci-fi/ass-kicking show on FOX.
Dollhouse stars hometown girl and executive producer Eliza Dushku as a programmable "Active": wiped of her memories and implanted with new, false ones, she's available to perform assorted jobs for the highest bidder. Loosely based on Valley of the Dolls, Dushku plays Echo, one of the Dolls who's starting to realize the magnitude of her situation. FBI Agent Paul Ballard (Tahmoh Penikett, or toaster-loving Helo on Battlestar Galactica) poses a threat to the whole shebang, obsessively searching for the truth behind the secret.
Born in Watertown, Dushku is best known for her roles as Faith in Buffy, as Tru Davies in Tru Calling, and as Kirsten Dunst's limber best friend in Bring it On. Fans feverishly caught the first 10 minutes of Dollhouse at the New York Comic Con last week, giving it a major thumbs up. The word "hot" may have been used a few times.
Whedon and Dushku also recently addressed the rash of promotional posters (some of them nearly-NSFW), saying that the show deals with sexuality and sex. With Dolls being freakily brainwashed to perform various dastardly deeds for clients, the posters are intended to make people uncomfortable. Judging by the amount of fanboy squee sprinkled around the internet, the discomfort is not unwelcome.
Dollhouse premieres tonight at 9 on FOX.
