Ah, Valentine’s Day. So much on the line for the hopeless romantic looking to impress a date. Screw it up, and you’re toast. Luckily for you, Bostonist comes with a bit of cocktail advice today. Our two favorite drinks from the Don Julio event at Masa will knock the chill out of a February night and give you brownie points for doing something completely different. You can thank us tomorrow.
Our appetizer was Masa’s chipotle-spiked clam chowder, which is a normal part of the restaurant’s menu and well worth the trip to the South End (though their menu is slightly different tonight). To top it off, it was paired with our favorite cocktail of the evening, the Tres Chiles Margarita.
Why did we love this pairing so much? Well, they both had plenty of layers in their flavor—and in Boston, you quickly learn to love anything layered. The margarita, in fact, had a lovely progression of three flavors: first, a crisp cucumber taste, then a strong citrus from the lemon and lime, and finally, the heat from three types of chiles. It matched perfectly with the chowder, which also had a bit of late bite to it from the chipotle paste.
Our next favorite pairing involved the main course—despite our being hopelessly full by this point in the evening. The dish (which does not appear on Masa’s regular menu, so you may be out of luck unless you know the chef) was a massive meatball of pork, veal, and beef, stuffed with Oaxaca cheese. It literally melted in your mouth. Combine that with the best “typical” margarita we’ve ever had, and we wished we could have split up the dinner over two nights to be able to appreciate everything more fully.
We’ve added the two cocktail recipes below and highly recommend either to add summer flair to your Valentine’s Day. Enjoy!
