The Bruins are back! For the moment!
After an uncharacteristic four-game winless streak, the B's broke through in a big way last night, slapping the Hurricanes for a 5-1 rout, spoiling Glen Wesley Night in Raleigh, and easing their minds as they head to Florida for a few days of fun and sun. After falling 1-0, Blake Wheeler tied the game on a power play late in the first. Shane Hnidy gave the B's the lead in the second, and Krejci and Kobasew buried the Canes before Patrice Bergeron sealed it with an empty-netter.
And the subject of empty nets brings us back to Wesley, who began as a Bruin, famously missed a wide open net in triple overtime against Edmonton in the Finals, and got traded to the Whalers (the list of ex-Whalers, by the way, grows shorter and shorter) for picks and personnel that eventually turned into Dennis Wideman and Milan Lucic. Tracing the history of hockey transactions, by the way, is not for the faint of heart. We're pretty sure Calgary traded a guy to themselves once.
And speaking of trades that don't make an awful lot of sense, the Celtics sent Sam Cassell to Sacramento. Sam hasn't seen a minute of action this year (though he did get ejected from one game), but we were under the impression that he was just biding his time for the playoff run, which Sacramento will not be participating in. The C's got a 2nd round pick in like 30 years, but apparently the reason for the deal was to clear a roster spot in case some free agent catches Danny Ainge's eye in the next couple of weeks. And with Tony Allen undergoing possibly-season-ending surgery, bodies may well be needed. And there's always the chance the Kings could cut Sam and he could make his way back here.
David Ortiz says guys caught with steroids should be suspended for a year. Which means he'll be getting a visit from the players' union goons and maybe a session in the Clockwork Orange chair. A-Rod gave his press conference yesterday; whatever, it gave Shaughnessy a chew toy for a day.
