Leave it to the savvy folks over at EW.com's PopWatch Blog to start our morning off by linking two of our favorite things: six-time Academy Award nominee Kate Winslet and our own Boston Red Sox. The PopWatchers asked readers if it might be better for Winslet not to win an Oscar for her Best Actress-nominated role in The Reader on Sunday, as her story will be less interesting once she finally has that statue in her hand.
The proof? According to EW.com, the Olde Towne Team: "Then again, let's be honest here: The Red Sox pretty much ceased being interesting the moment the 2004 World Series ended."
Let us be honest: we here in Boston never experienced a sweeter moment in professional athletics than when the Sox finally won the World Series (although we encourage the Bruins to win the Stanley Cup for the first time since most of us can remember). It was a magical experience and now makes for a wonderful memory. But we're so ridiculously glad it finally happened, already.
Additionally, the team that ended that chapter is certainly still keeping things interesting—and winning again in 2007 was pretty special in its own right. As long as Boston baseball and the delightful Winslet continue to do good work, they are in of themselves interesting and worthy of the accolades.
But this poses a great question: what other teams and Hollywood stars seem like logical pairings? We love Meryl Streep, but do her 15 Academy Award nominations make her the cinematic version of the Yankees? After all, she was born in Jersey...
