Welcome to Collegitate Matchup, a new feature on Bostonist. We'll be bringing you the big games from our local universities every week and we certainly decided on a great weekend to start. On Friday night, we caught some men’s ice hockey, as the #1 ranked Terriers of BU took on the #4/5 ranked Huskies of Northeastern at Agganis arena.
The Terriers played a fairly dominant first period, with the first tally from senior Brandon Yip coming at 7:23. Matt Gilroy intercepted a pass outside the BU blue line and came down the left side before sliding the puck over to Yip as he skated into the right slot for his 12th goal of the season. BU added a second goal by sophomore Colin Wilson, which allowed them to go 1–4 on power plays in the first. Wilson found the puck off of a rebound and put it top shelf to notch his 13th goal this year.
The second period was all Huskies as Northeastern was able to tie the game up at 2 goals a piece. Sophomore Steve Silva got the Huskies started by notching his 2nd goal of the year just after the 10 minute mark with assists from junior Greg Costa and senior Louis Liotti. Not to be outdone, the Huskies also scored their second goal of the game on a power play that sent Terrier Colby Cohen to the box. Wade MacLeod dangled the puck behind the BU goal before slipping around the right and netting the it past BU freshman Kieran Millan.
Although the third period didn’t see any scoring, it did begin getting a little chippy. Eventually cooler heads prevailed with only 1 set of matching minors in the third, and no penalties in overtime. After OT, however, things got reheated with 8 penalties being called on 6 players, 3 from each team. This set the stage for Saturday night’s rematch at Northeastern.
Saturday night’s contest saw a traffic jam of Sagamore Bridge proportions head to the penalty box, with a combined 20 power plays being up for grabs during the game. Unfortunately, despite the numerous power plays in the game, neither team could capitalize. The contest ended in a 1–1 tie. Senior Matt Gilroy kept up the Terriers' shorthanded hot streak by burying the puck on a practically open net at the 7:39 mark of the third. Gilroy became the eighth Terrier to record a shorthanded goal this season. Northeastern would not go down without a fight, however, as freshman Steve Quailer stuffed in a rebound for the Huskies at the 17:38, which ended the scoring for the evening.
The tie marked the third for BU in its last three games, giving them a 23-5-4 record on the year, while Northeastern left the weekend at 20-8-4. The Huskies retain their one-point lead in the Hockey East league.

This was an exciting game to watch in person. I happened to sit directly in front of a platoon of approximately 50 Northeastern fans, all wearing Huskies jerseys, who chanted relentlessly throughout the game, cowing many nearby BU fans who were anemic in comparison. The Huskies fans got a little offensive at times, but overall they were entertaining. The hockey rivalry between these two schools is intense and fun to experience right now.
It was indeed a great game to watch in person. The level at which these college athletes perform is astounding. Coming from an area with only club hockey at the college level I was surprised at the level of competition I saw. These guys are fast and they hit hard.
College hockey here has been consistently good for as long as I can remember. It ultimately gets back to coaching. BC/BU especially have been producing high-caliber players for 30 years. NU is flourishing this winter, which is great for all of the programs.
I believe we'll be covering the BC/Northeastern game on 3/7 as well if you're into hockey. We'd also love to hear about which games our readers want covered 9in all sports) so please feel free to let us know!
