On Thursday, Boston fans were treated to the latest chapter of an epic rivalry in the Boston sports scene. Set aside your notions of Red Sox-Yankees, Celtics-Lakers, Bruins-Canadians. We're talking the long-standing feud between the Boston Globe and WEEI, which was thrust back into the spotlight courtesy of the blogging equivalent of a flat-palm slap across the face dealt by Boston.com's Chad Finn.
Finn's post on Thursday, "Fixing Sports Radio," outlined the author's take on what he views as problems over at 'EEI and included at least a half dozen cackle-worthy slams on the huge radio station. Our personal favorite jab: "No, passing yourself off as some sort of insider because of an association with the Celtics two decades ago does not count, particularly when there is mounting suspicion that you haven’t watched more than a handful of out-of-market NBA games since the days of short shorts and sky hooks." OH MAN! FINN WITH THE TAKEDOWN!
The backstory behind this? Well, there are two bits to consider. First, with WEEI taking to the Internet through their own blogs, Boston.com is now facing some more intense online competition. But there is history here: for some reason or another (Adam Reilly cuts through the mutual finger pointing to provide what seems like the most knowledgeable take), Globe staffers haven't appeared on EEI for years.
We wanted to take a listen to EEI this morning to hear the response to Finn's piece (we expect that the writer might have unintentionally prompted an extra blip in WEEI listenership), but weren't able to make that magic happen. Finn reported in a Friday afternoon chat on Boston.com that the post was a big ol' topic of conversation.
The folks over at Sons of Sam Horn are largely cheering Finn's take, but we want to see what Bostonist readers think. Was Finn on the money or way off base? And did you make a special point to listen to WEEI today?
