Both the Celtics and Bruins enjoyed days off on Monday, which meant that everyone could take a breather and take a look at Ghosts of Boston Athletes Past.
In the case of the Pats, the athlete being examined was the newest ex-Patriot: Matt Cassel. The man who would be Brady met with reporters in Kansas City for the first time and offered up a chunk of perfectly delivered lines about how excited he is to be a Chief. The word from the man in the spotlight is that he - like many hardcore Pats fans out there - had expected to be traded the moment New England slapped that franchise tag on him.
The best quip of the day, a notable and funny exception to the otherwise straightforward soundbites, came when he sarcastically said of Kansas City safety (and Brady maimer) Bernard Pollard, "I will talk to him and say hello, say thank you for the opportunity."
On the Bruins front, we looked deeper into the archives until we came across the single best hockey mask in the history of the game. Cheesy Cheevers (otherwise known as Gerry) is expected to participate in a federal court case later this week. The case, which has five defendants and a lovely alleged connection to the mob, involves threats of arson, sports gambling and intimidation.
It also apparently involves Cheevers, although he says that he has no idea why. Needless to say, this will get interesting. We'll be looking to see if Dennis Lehane uses this premise for an upcoming novel. Start your casting for the film adaptation now!
On the baseball front, we'll ignore the progress being made during Red Sox spring training and take a look at Washington, D.C. For anyone who is still thinking about that whole "Red Sox are so boring this year" concept, just be happy that we don't have rumors swirling around in our front office. No news is good news.
Tonight: Bruins face off against the Flyers. Let the fists fly!
