Collegiate Matchup: Ice Hockey: BC vs. Northeastern

This past weekend was another big one for Hockey East as the Eagles of BC squared off against the Huskies of Northeastern. Going in to Friday night’s game at Matthews’s arena the Huskies were ranked #4 in the nation and held onto the top spot in the Hockey East conference. The Eagles were ranked nationally at #20, and had the chance to play conference spoiler if they could come up with a win.

Friday night’s game was a tight one, with BC jumping out to a 1-0 lead at 7:41 when senior captain Brock Bradford took a pass from senior Tim Kunes just after a 5-on-3 had ended. This score would hold up for nearly the entire game until Husky junior Randy Guzior would score an extra attacker goal with just 25.8 seconds to go in the contest. With the possibility of their first place on the line, the Huskies came out fighting in overtime and freshman Steve Quailer got the puck past BC goalie John Muse with just 1:05 remaining. The win was the 23rd for Huskies goalie Brad Thiessen who is currently nominated for multiple awards including the Hockey East Player of the Year, All-America and the Hobey Baker Award.

Saturday night’s rematch saw the BC Eagles come out strong while the Huskies couldn’t seem to stay out of the penalty box. An early 5 minute major for hitting from behind on Chris Donovan a mere 2:33 into the game could have spelled disaster for the Huskies but smart and aggressive play allowed them to kill off the penalty. Northeastern junior David Strathman got the scoring started a few minutes later on a power play goal at 9:12 of the 1st frame. BC was not to be outdone this night however as they got their own scoring started on the power play with freshman Cam Atkinson taking the pass from Bradford near the goal line and lifting a shot just under the crossbar. Boston College really turned the pressure on for senior night as they scored 3 additional goals in the middle stanza. Seniors Brock Bradford and Benn Ferriero, along with freshman Jimmy Hayes, all put the puck in the net to put a strain on the Huskies chance for their first conference regular season title. Northeastern outshot Boston College, 16-3, in the 3rd period but couldn't get anything past Muse.

Northeastern is hosting UMASS in Hockey East Quarterfinals action at Matthews Arena Friday, Saturday and Sunday with all game starting at 7 p.m. Boston College travels to Durham, NH to take on the UNH Wildcats in their Quarterfinal series.

And we love you for it! We love all of our Boston schools and BU was actually 1/2 of the subject of our first ever collegiate matchup feature 2 weeks ago http://bostonist.com/2009/02/23/collegiate_matchup_ice_hockey_bu_vs.php
