Varda

Agnès Varda is the sort of filmmaker that you either love or hate. But did you know that she is also an installation artist? Bostonist didn't, and we're psyched to learn that she's installing something in the Carpenter Center. Her video piece Les Veuves de Noirmoutier (The Widows of Noirmoutier) opens today, and Varda will be on hand to introduce the work. Carpenter Center, Harvard University, 24 Quincy St., Cambridge, 6 p.m., reception to follow. Free.

Movies

Billy Wilder, on the other hand, is a crowd-pleaser. The Brattle screens his 1948 romantic comedy A Foreign Affair to kick off its series Selling Democracy: The Films of the Marshall Plan. Come for the perspective on post-war Berlin, stay for Marlene Dietrich. Brattle Theatre, 40 Brattle St. Cambridge, 5:30 p.m.

Pre-parties

The Boston Underground Film Festival opens March 19, but if you want a taste of the bizarre, perverted, and downright sleazy cinema that it plans to unreel, show up at the pre-party tonight. Featuring trailers and complimentary food and drink. Space 242, 242 E. Berkeley St., 6 p.m. Free with RSVP.

Dancing Hipsters

Todo Mundo is the showcase for DJ Lone Wolf, who spins everything from hip-hop to dancehall in an inspired, global mix. Tonight is his swan song at the current Milky Way space. Sam Adams is also sponsoring a free beer bowl tournament, the last one ever. Milky Way, 403 Center St., Jamaica Plain, 9:00pm. Free.
