Last night, this Bostonist tagged along with Christine Liu, Citysearch's Boston editor, as she scarfed down bevy of one- and five-dollar deals at upscale restaurant Great Bay. For one dollar a piece, we received a plate of tater tots, a plate of onion rings, and a plate of grilled cheese nibbles, made with crusty bread and perfectly melted cheddar cheese.
This mini-feast was "research" for her new project, Three Buck Bites. An offshoot of Citysearch in the vein of Mopshots.com, one of the company's other (successful) attempts to garner hipster cred and a diversified media portfolio, the site looks like it was designed by Juno, with "Cheap eats for food lovers" scrawled atop the friendly, colorful page. Below is food pr0n aplenty, from shrimp ceviche in Silverlake, CA ($2.79) to bacon-covered chocolate in NYC ($1.00).
The content is user-generated, with large photos and Yelp-like reviews written in the first person; presiding over it all is team of "Dictators," a team of very active users who post frequently and maintain food sites of their own, including Bostonist's very own Cave Cibum.
Food lovers about town can submit tips to the site or even apply for Dictator status; if you think you've got the chops (no pun intended), you can apply here.

Copy Foodgawker and Yelp. Really creative.
Ha, I was at Great Bay last night too!
confirmed from chef david ross -- that lovely creamy 'cheese' oozing from inside the fingers of white-bread grilled sandwich is none other than velveeta! he shrugged with a grin and said, 'people can say whatever, but, look: it's a DOLLAR.' and he is soooo right.
