Bukowski Tavern, Harpoon, and The Weekly Dig have teamed up again for the “Pint and Pen” writing contest. The premise is simple: write a short-short story between 500 and 750 words long. The hard part is including these four essential words: pint, pen, Bukowski, and Harpoon. The harder part is competing against dozens of other word lovers who revel in the romantic notion of being a hard-drinking genius of letters.
Why would you enter? Well, the first prize is a big fat $2,500 check, for one thing. (Handed to the winner last year on an over-sized check like Publisher’s Clearing House!) The winning story also gets published in The Weekly Dig. Second prize is also nothing to sneeze at: a solid $1,000. And saving the best for last, the third place winner receives a set of steak knives!
To enter you must deliver your typed submission to Bukowski Tavern (the Boston or Cambridge location) by closing time (2am) on Tuesday, April 28th. It must also include an entry form, which can be found at either Bukowski locations and on the Harpoon website.
The winners are revealed at the Champion Announcement Party on Wednesday, May 6th at the Cambridge Bukowski location, beginning at 6pm. Come early ‘cause it gets packed fast and if your name doesn’t get called you at least want to have gotten a good buzz out of the night.

What do readers think about product placement in fiction? Shouldn't your writing be the last reserve of your individual vision, not pimped out to sell products?
Its also interesting that it only takes a few thou, a website and some publicity machinery to host a short-story contest. If any of you are against using your pens to promote pints, beer, or Bukowski-style alcoholism, perhaps you have other ideas for contests that could promote the world views you cherish. Like.....?
