Thursday Happenings

Spitzer Space Telescope. Not half as broken as the Hubble but with twice the kanji.
Space Telescopes

Bostonist caught Spitzer Space Telescope at the Otherside of the Bear folk show, and we loved his spazziness. With Spirit Family Reunion. Alchemist Lounge, 435 S. Huntington Ave., Jamaica Plain, 10 p.m. Free.

Super 8

Zuzu's Mambo Beat Club is always a great place to wear your knee high acrylic boots, but tonight, Cambridge's mod dance night will also be shooting a music video of some sort. On Super 8 film, which, we suppose, makes it a music film? It's all too much for us, but then again, we don't own any skinny ties. With DJ Wayne and Beat Train. Zuzu Restaurant, 472 Mass. Ave., Cambridge, 11 p.m. Free.

Wine

It seems like we never shut up about the Second Glass's Crash Course Wine Seminars, and we wish we could say it was because its organizers paid us. Unfortunately, it's simply because these events are so freaking rewarding, um, intellectually. Tonight, the organizers take a look at varietal blends, which have always been a wine store mystery to us. Bin Ends owner John Hafferty leads the seminar. Bin Ends, 236 Wood Rd., Braintree, 7 p.m. $15.

Pluto

Bostonist will never be down with what they did to Pluto, but they had their reasons. Learn them tonight at the MoS's What Happened to Pluto? Museum of Science, Science Park. Through May 1. Tickets and showtimes.

"They" did not have valid scientific reasons but political ones. Only four percent of the IAU voted to demote Pluto, and most are not planetary scientists. Their decision was immediately opposed by hundreds of professional astronomers led by Dr. Alan Stern, Principal Investigator of NASA's New Horizons mission to Pluto. The IAU definition makes no sense in that it states that dwarf planets are not planets at all and in that it classifies objects solely by where they are while ignoring what they are. If Earth were in Pluto's orbit, according to the IAU definition, it would not be considered a planet either.

Please do not blindly accept and present the IAU interpretation as fact when it is just one side in an ongoing debate.
