Music Monday: Bostonist Music Picks for the Week

weeklymusicnewbanner.jpg

Once upon a time, we gave you weekly music picks. We're trying to bring that back. Each Monday we'll tell you where to go—and, sometimes, where not to go—for decent tunes this week. We'll try to strike a balance between local bands and visiting acts. And what a fortuitous week to begin: the Rock 'n Roll Rumble brings us lavish local talent all week long. Got other suggestions? Send 'em in.

Tuesday, April 7

Mates of State are joined by Black Kids in what's likely to be a borderline cloying show at the House of Blues. We can take or leave the overbearingly upbeat (and rather squawky) Black Kids (though we also refuse to teach anyone how to dance with you), but we retain great affection for Mates of State. While we acknowledge the "overly cute couple band" annoyance, we're still a sucker for bright harmonies and bubbly keyboards. So sue us. This show is probably sold out anyway; if not, they'll make you wait in line forever to get your sweet treat.

Wednesday, April 8

Singer-songwriter and spirit healer Cris Williamson will participate in a Women in Music Panel at Berklee alongside Didi Stewart, associate professor of voice; and Rhiannon, voice instructor. Moderated by Beth Denisch, associate professor of composition, the panel will focus on women's music in the 1960s and 1970s and feature clips from Radical Harmonies, a documentary on the women's music movement. Berklee's Loft (939 Boylston St.), from 2:30 to 4:30 pm. Free.

Wild Light! Wild Light! Everyone's freaking about Wild Light! As well they should. Having just rocked SXSW and secured a tour gig opening for The Killers, Wild Light is poised on the edge of great fame. Head to Great Scott Wednesday so you can say you saw 'em way back when—with Faces on Film, not a bad band themselves.
1222 Commonwealth Ave in Allston, 9 pm, $8.00 advance / $10 doors [ tix ]

Check Many Mansions at O'Brien's if you want to get your college drum circle on, with a touch of psychedelica to boot.
3 Harvard Ave in Allston, 9 pm, 21+, $7.00

Thursday, April 9

We were frozen out of a Hot Day at the Zoo performance earlier this year. Fortunately, the bluegrass band is something of a mainstay at Johnny D's in Somerville. For those located a little further from town, look for the band at Tammany Hall in Worcester tonight with Girls Guns and Glory, last year's Rock 'n Roll Rumble winners.
43 Pleasant St in Worcester, 8 pm, $8 [ tix ]

Locally, Lake Street Dive plays the Lizard Lounge. Does it get any better than quirky pop in an intimate setting? Only if the performer buys you a drink.
1667 Massachusetts Ave in Cambridge, 8:30 pm, 21+, $8 advance / $10 doors [ tix ]

Friday, April 10

Tonight calls for a tough decision. Would you like to be wowed by Sarah Borges' full voice and country-tinged guitar at Church (69 Kilmarnock St, 9pm, $10), or falsely soothed into slumber by The Books' subtle acousto-found sound stylings (only to be blasted awake moments later) at the ICA (100 Northern Ave, 7pm and 9:45pm, $25)? We'll let you decide.

Saturday, April 11

More difficult choices confront us on Saturday. Dig The Tallest Man on Earth's quirky, endaring, and possibly shirtless style in a unique setting at the Brattle (40 Brattle St in Cambridge, 9pm, $15), or head to the Berklee Performance Center to glory in Neko Case's ridiculous pipes (136 Massachusetts Ave, 8pm, $30)? If neither option appeals, try Caspian at Great Scott or Superdrag at the Paradise.

Sunday, April 12

Extra Golden plays the Middle East. The band is kinda like Yeasayer, but more psychedelic? We haven't quite figured 'em out yet, but are more than willing to give Extra Golden a test listen on a lazy Easter evening.
472 Massachusetts Ave in Cambridge, 8pm, $12 [ tix ]
