Two outs, bottom of nine, bases loaded, winning run on base. It's the setup Red Sox fans always want for their home team. It's the situation on which whatever man up at bat has delivered for us time and time again.
Only problem? We're the visitors. We're cheering for the guy on the mound - Jonathan Papelbon - hoping that this is the time in which the mighty Casey (Howie Kendrick) would strike out. Instead, Kendrick popped up to Rocco Baldelli, the Sox squeaked by with a 5-4 win, Brad Penny picked up his first win (six innings, five hits, two strikeouts, on walk) and Jason Bay proved just why we love to call him our left fielder. Two homers for Bay on the day, with another from Mike Lowell.
The Bruins weren't quite as interested in delivering an exciting win on Saturday. In fact, we don't think the Bs were particularly interested in playing on Saturday. That's all we could gather, based on the fact that they had a chance to win the President's Cup and decided instead to lethargically skate their way to a 6-1 loss against the Sabres. We're as happy as the next person that the team's in the position it is, don't get us wrong, but wow. That was lifeless. Boston wraps up the regular season at 5 p.m. today in New York.
In Celtics news, prepare for the Clash of the Titans, Part Deux: Bill Kennedy vs. Doc Rivers. Will they play nice or will the fines be a-flyin'?
Finally, congratulations to Boston University hockey! Overtime victory was had by the now NCAA Champion BU Terriers on Saturday, which means the collegiate title stays in Boston for another year.
