Wednesday Happenings

Weird Music

Eugene Chadbourne can improvise on many instruments, including the guitar, banjo, and a clawlike feedback device that he calls the "electric rake" and that he wields, at times, like a friendly Freddy Krueger. Bostonist once saw him perform in a t-shirt that read "Just say no... to Schwag," which should indicate that free jazz is not the only thing that inspires the North Carolina resident. Johnny D's Uptown, 17 Holland St., Somerville, 8:30 p.m. $10.

Jazz

Fly is a jazz trio that features three stars of the young jazz scene with two LPs already under its belt. Fly doesn't perform together all that frequently, so its two night Boston residency is not to be missed. The trio will perform a set of its own music before inviting Berklee students to jam, in the long tradition of jazz collaboration. Presented by Marsalis Berklee Jams. The Red Room at Cafe 939, 939 Boylston St., 8 p.m., through Thursday. $10.

Whimsy

If you are the type of person who likes cultivated whimsy, Zack Hickman's House of Ill Repute will be replete with it. Featuring 80s throwback performers and pretend rappers. The Beehive, 541 Tremont St., 9 p.m. No cover, reservations required for dinner.

Cocktails for Justice

Our old friends at Socializing for Justice hit Dot tonight for a cocktail party. Drink, nibble appetizers, plot to save the world. Blarney Stone, 1509 Dot. Ave., Dorchester, 6 p.m. $2.
