Agganis Arena was packed last Friday as 20- and 30-somethings with Bud Lights or Harpoon IPAs in hand found their places in the venue. All were eagerly anticipating a performance by the New Zealand musical duo Flight of the Conchords, who perform live as a band and also have a hit TV show about trying to make it performing live as a band. Meta!
Eugene Mirman, who plays the musical duo's landlord (also named “Eugene”) on the HBO show, opened the evening on a positive note, calling God a 12-year-old with Asperger’s syndrome and reading a disgruntled letter that compared Delta to Al-Qaeda. Kristen Schaal came on next to massive applause and lifted the mood a bit. On the show, Schaal plays the Flight of the Conchords’ number one fan, Mel, and she carried the same eccentric vein in her comedic set.
Wearing gold lame pants that she claimed to have killed a genie for, Schaal gave a diverse performance including commentary on the economic bailout (she feels the funds should be spent on finding Amelia Earhart) and some play-acting with cookware and a mattress costume. She created a love triangle between a pot, a lid, and a spurned spoon: “Oh, pot. Oh, lid. It’s like we were made for each other in a factory somewhere.” Her portrayal of a college student’s mattress that gets passed around was also epic.

FOTC’s Bret and Jemaine came out dressed as robots and opened with the classic “Too Many Dicks on the Dance Floor.” They then stripped down, exciting the ladies—Jemaine wore a khaki leisure suit with a blue v-neck tee (and plenty o’chest hair) and Bret was in a skinny black tie, white button-down shirt, and gray pants—and continued with “Hurt Feelings.” Although they played a slew of Season 2 songs (“We’re Both in Love With a Sexy Lady,” “Sugar Lumps,” and “Devil Woman”), the duo didn’t forget to include classics like “Mutha’uckas” and “Jenny” from Season 1 of the HBO show that launched their careers.
The pair encouraged audience participation in the chorus of ooh’s in “Carol Brown”, and Jemaine sang a requested “ginger balls” medley. The duo's stage-side manner was relaxed and playful; Jemaine teased Bret when he missed a beat and Bret called to passing security guards, saying they must be looking for jelly donuts. The pair was joined on stage by a hippie-looking character named Neil (who they claimed made up the entire New Zealand orchestra) who played cello and bongo drums. The boys spiced up their set musically by playing the cymbal (with a little bit of drum), synth, xylophone, and a small children’s piano. Crowd favorites included the lengthy “Bowie” and wah-wah filled “Business Time.” The night ended in a standing ovation, and the arena glowed with cell phones and smuggled-in cameras as everyone tried to get a shot of the famous pair.
Let it be known that, per FOTC request, our town will be called “Boston Space” and “Boston City” from now on.
