The Independent Film Festival, Boston kicks off today with The Brothers Bloom (2008), a sprawling film by Rian Johnson about a pair of orphaned brothers who become con men, endure doubt, and set out for one last, big score. Somerville Theater, 55 Davis Square, 7 p.m.
Chinese Rock
Chinese Stars, a Providence supergroup composed of former members of noise rock bands Six Finger Satellite and Arab on Radar, make angular, bouncy spazz rock. Playing with folksy weirdo Greg Ashley and the reigning skiffle champions of Boston, The In-Out. Limelight Stage and Studios, 204 Tremont St., 8 p.m. $8.
Dancing Hipsters
Simian Mobile Disco is a traveling two man party. A pair of London DJs, SMD remixes house music until it is IDM. Or vice versa. The end result is the kind of dance beats you always expected to hear in cyberpunk movies instead of cloddish industrial music. The future is finally now. Paradise Rock Club, 967 Comm. Wine
Our old friends at the Second Glass have recovered sufficiently from their Wine Riot to present their regularly scheduled Crash Course wine seminar. Today, the topic is organic wines, perfect for Earth Day. Downtown Wine and Spirits, 225 Elm St., Somerville, 7 p.m. $15.
