The Volvo Race bills itself as the Everest of Sailing. It is a 37,000 nautical mile worldwide race from Alicante, Spain to St Petersburg, Russia. Lots of modern sports like to bill themselves as extreme, but none of them are even in the same league as this. Sailing through some of the world’s most dangerous seas, each team of 11 will spend over 9 months on the seas not only racing each other, but simply trying to survive whatever mother nature decides to throw their way.
Boston plays home to the event for the next several weeks with a number of activities in the only North American port. In addition, Boston is home to the Puma Racing Team and they’re pulling out all the stops to showcase Boston’s sailing traditions. At the heart of it is PUMA City, which according to their Facebook page is an 11,000 square-foot retail and event structure made from twenty-four, forty-foot long steel shipping containers, each weighing in at eleven tons. The city is located at Fan Pier in Boston’s Seaport district just off of Northern Avenue near the Fort Point Channel.
Events over the next few weeks include free nightly concerts, an in port race, Collegiate National Championships, and the inner harbor pro/am.
