This is a great week: for music, and in general. Our friend Bradley and his (awesomely redesigned) Almanac are having a rad show this Friday, PA's is hosting a Jonathan Richman tribute Saturday, and did you notice we set a heat record today? Things will get cooler temperature-wise but hotter music-wise as the week goes on. Here are a few picks for tonight and beyond if you want to rock out.
Tuesday, April 28
Peter Bjorn and John
with Chairlift
at the Paradise (967 Comm. Ave)
Some endearing Swedish lads will present an endearing indie show. Whistling is guaranteed. Tickets, however, are not: the thing is sold out. Weep, indie rockers, weep. Then whistle.
Sonic Boom
at the Middle East (472 Mass. Ave., Cambridge)
"It's just me and my spike in my arm and my spoon." Orrr, it's just Sonic Boom taking you back to the eighties.
The Woodrow Wilsons
with The Accident That Led Me To the World, Chris Bell
Midway Cafe (3496 Washington Street, Jamaica Plain)
Oh, this is getting political! Failed Texas gubernatorial candidate (or some band named after him) Chris Bell visits JP alongside the clones of Woodrow Wilson. We really like bands named after presidents, especially when they sound as old-timey as Woody's glasses look. Will a fight over Texas secession result? Attend to discover!
Wednesday, April 29
Noah and the Whale
with Ferraby Lionheart, Anni Rossi
at the Paradise
Is this like the movie The Squid and the Whale? Not really. Do they know that Jonah is the one with the whale? Not sure. Will this be the last band to cover "Devil Town"? Not by a long shot.
Hangman's Alphabet
with Ninja Academy, 14 Foot 1, ITtheverb
at O'Brien's (3 Harvard Ave, Allston)
Boston Band Crush has a crush on this show. Maybe you should too.
Thursday, April 30
Bouncing Souls
with The Loved Ones, Black President, Detournement
at the Paradise
Does the fact that the Bouncing Souls are on a 20th anniversary tour make you feel old? They'll be back on Saturday evening if you can't lace up your Docs in time for Thursday.
Bowerbirds
with Bell, Sarah Rabdau and the Self-Employed Assassins
at TT the Bear's (10 Brookline St)
We love ourselves some assassins. Plus, birds and bells. Oh, how musical.
Friday, May 1
Now, Now Every Children
with The Hush Now, Let's Whisper, You Can Be a Wesley
at TT the Bear's
Our very own Nick plays in the Bradley's Almanac show that seems to be centered on reticent names.
Mogwai
with The Twilight Sad
at the Wilbur Theatre
If silent names don't do it for you, maybe Scottish music will. A classic band and an up-and-comer play together in what's sure to be a depressingly amazing show.
GAVIN ROSSDALE
with some people you've never heard of
at the Paradise
We hate to give you too many choices for a Friday night, but come on: Gavin Rossdale? There's no Bush appearance scheduled, but maybe Gwen will be around. Fingers crossed.
Saturday, May 2
Jonathan Richman Tribute
featuring Ponies in the Surf, Hands and Knees, The Double Stops, Young & Old, and more
at PA's Lounge (345 Somerville Ave, Somerville)
Well, if it isn't a tribute to our favorite Modern Lover. We can't imagine anything better. Except maybe a girl that we could care about.
Sunday, May 3
Memorial for Jeanne Connolly
with Dirty Truckers, Joyce & Chick, Shaun Wortis, and more
2pm, free
TT's the Bear's
TT's bartender and local music supporter Connolly passed away in February. Pay tribute to her memory this weekend.
Look out for Pontiak and Akron/Family on Monday, May 4 as well.
