Jay Mohr will appear for 2 shows at The Wilbur Theatre - Saturday, May 2nd
Although Jay Mohr is currently starring on CBS' "Gary Unmarried" (potential Emmy nomination for him!) on Wednesday's at 8:30pm, you might know him from about a million other things: his seasons on "Saturday Night Live", his roles on Jerry Maguire and Picture Perfect and other movies, his ground-breaking TV series "Action", and his involvement with sports shows like "Mohr Sports", Fox Sports Net's "Beyond the Glory", and "The Jim Rome Show".

Jay Mohr will be at The Wilbur Theatre on Saturday, May 2nd to do two shows (7:00pm & 9:45pm). He'll be bringing his stand-up act, complete with sports talk and his incredible impressions. We had the chance to talk to Jay on the phone as he made his way to his house in Santa Monica before we lost the cell signal. It was a privilege to talk to a guy who, as a comedian, an actor, and a sports fan is so committed and knowledgeable - Boston is in for a real treat.

Listen to the entire audio interview:

Bostonist: We're talking to you to find out about your upcoming trip to Boston!

Jay Mohr: I can't wait to go back to Boston, I've always loved performing in Boston, truly more than any other city. You can go back through the archives and look up all other interviews and you'll see I've never said that before [laughs]. It really is, in my opinion, the best comedy town in the country, I think it stems from how hard everyone in Boston works, and how they appreciate someone who works hard. I think it's also the first group of people that will tell you that you stink.

It's like, "I busted my ass at an auto shop all week, I have two kids with this marriage, and two kids with another marriage that I'm paying child support on, I cobbled together some money to see this comedy show, so don't half-ass it on me, pal" and I respect that!

I think the thing about Boston too, is that they know I'm not there for the money because I have [a TV] show. I've never just done Boston as stand-up, I've always brought a resume with me, and I really love doing stand-up. And I think [Boston] audiences are the best bullshit detectors than anywhere else. Look at the heroes of Boston, the Sweeneys, the Don Gavins, and the Learys, Don Gavin can show up anywhere in Boston and it can sell out in an hour's notice through word of mouth.

Look at the Red Sox, there's not a seat to be had. Why? Because they're always covered in dirt, they're always diving for the ball all over the ball park. Look at Yankee Stadium, there's empty seats behind home plate. Why? Because they fucking suck. They're bloated fat fucking millionaires and even New Yorkers are saying "enough!"

Bostonist: You've got a huge interest in sports, are you going to talk about the Red Sox at the show?

Jay Mohr: We're going to talk a lot about the Sox, we're going to talk about Fenway fans, we're going to talk a lot about Revere, a lot about Saugus, we're going to talk about Braintree, I'm going to hit all the suburbs, no one is safe. I know where everyone is driving in from.

I've also got a lot of new impressions. Everyone likes the Christopher Walken, but we've got the Tracy Morgan, the Al Pacino, the Vincent D'Onofrio, the David Caruso, we have the Norm MacDonald, the Adam Sandler, it's a madhouse.

Bostonist: You have this incredible familiarity with Boston, are there some specific spots you want to go to?

Jay Mohr: I'm going to The Quiet Man for some beef kabobs, am going to Too for a couple cocktails, I will most certainly give my respect to Yawkey Drive, and I'll pretty much walk around with a smile on my face because I'll be happy to be in the city. But if they are going to retire my number, I will show up at the Garden. If they're going to put my number up in the rafters, I will definitely stay longer for that. Number 2 - Mohr, M-O-H-R. I would stay for that.

You know, first pitch, I'm good for that, and I would throw a strike. But I'd like to know what the hell they were thinking, having Ted Kennedy throw out the first pitch 4 days after a stroke. I think it was in terrible taste. I've seen peas fall out of my son's mouth that traveled further than that ball. Maybe give the guy a month of physical therapy before you put him in a Red Sox jacket and stand him 60 feet and 6 inches away from Varitek. That was terrible.

Listen to the entire audio interview (above) where Jay and I talk about "Gary Unmarried", "Ghost Whisperer", Jennifer Love Hewitt's breasts, Sarah Jessica Parker, his conversion to Catholicism, and gay marriage - then he must've reached Santa Monica and lost his cell signal.

Again, Jay Mohr will be at The Wilbur Theatre on Saturday, May 2nd to do two shows (7:00pm & 9:45pm), it will be fantastic.

You can keep up with Jay at his website.

Also comedy-related: don't forget that tonight, Jon Lajoie will be at The Wilbur, check out our video interview with Lajoie from last week - we will be at the show to shoot some more video for you.
