Sports Redux: Overtime, All the Time

clocks.jpg Listen, we're as down for a Boston victory as the next hometown fan and we're willing to do whatever it takes to get that W recorded. But unless the federal government is going to approve adding at least a couple extra hours to the day, this pattern of extra innings and overtime play has just got to stop.

The Celtics and Bulls have added approximately 421 minutes of overtime play to their ongoing still-in-the-first-freakin'-ROUND playoff battle. On Wednesday evening, the Red Sox decided that they wanted to extend what already must be a league-leading average game time by playing an extra inning before they recorded a 6-5 win in Cleveland. And that win didn't come until Jonathan Van Every (playing for the - shock! - injured JD Drew) decided to hit his first major league homer.

We don't mean to sound cranky. How could we possibly be anything but enthused with the way our teams are doing? But we're not going to lie - we're tired. We're doing everything we can to support all the teams right now. If you're following one sport and the team decides to burn the midnight oil, you can deal. But when all your teams are doing that, it takes a lot out of a fan. We're just sayin.

Blessedly not related to Boston baseball is the news out of New York, where new A-Rod allegations are emerging. According to these reports, A-Rod allegedly not only used steroids earlier than to which he's admitted - high school - he also used while with the Yanks.

Getting back to the Celtics, Game 6 begins tonight at 7 p.m. May it be finished in regulation, may it taste like victory for the men in green. Here's to Boston converting on final-minute free throws and here's to the ball winding up in Allen's hands in the event of a last-second buzzer-beater.
