Freak Folk
Akron/Family is a freak folk act with an emphasis on the "freak." The Williamsport, PA band's sound is capacious enough to include such disparate freaks as Syd Barrett, Sly Stone, and Frank Zappa, and that's before you even consider all the weird musique concrete experiments that it includes. Performing with Brad Barr, Faces on Film, and We Are the Arm. Middle East Downstairs, 472 Mass. Ave., Cambridge, 8 p.m. $12.
Movies With Rules
Faddish writer Chuck Palahniuk's Brattle appearance is sold out, but there's still an opportunity to see David Fincher's 1999 adaptation of Fight Club, a film that remains surprisingly supple despite its osmotic permeance into the popular culture. If tonight is your first time to see Fight Club, you know what you have to do. Brattle Theatre, 40 Brattle St., Cambridge, 9 p.m. $9.50.
New Music
Music doesn't come much newer than it does at the NEC's Composer's Series, which features fresh compositions from NEC faculty, alumni, and graduate students. Tonight, the series includes music from Andrea Pinto-Correia, Osnat Netzer, John Heiss, Matti Kovler, Lyle Davidson, and Stratis Minakakis. Jordan Hall, New England Conservatory, 30 Gainsborough St., 8 p.m. Free.
